Finding My Neverland

In the beginning i didn't care that much for reading.Yeah i enjoyed books like Matilda, Eloise and those nights when my father would read The Wind In the Willows to me. But books were never a necessity. I didn't need to read because i had my best friend Izzy Devine. From the day we met in nursery, Izzy and i were inseparable. We had become accustom to the endless and everyday play dates which consisted of visits to those worlds of the imagination. She helped me through the hard times and i will never forget what a great friend she was to me then and now. Unfortunately Izzy's dad had a job offer and she moved to New Jersey during the summer of second grade. Once she had moved i realized that third graders were "too old" to play make believe and that i was left with no one to create those elaborate pretend scenarios. So i was alone, i didn't want to grow up and all those around me at the time didn't see things the way i still did. During this time i received the book Peter Pan from my father. This book helped me through those hard times of change at home, at school and the resentment i had towards growing up. Eventually Izzy also matured and realized that pretending was considered childish, but i didn't mind. Because although people were changing, I had literature as a constant source of escape. Through reading i also discovered my love for acting. Because after i had read a book my mom would let me watch the movie. Like Matilda for example. The thought of pretending to be the characters i loved so dearly and getting paid to do so blew my mind. I would be able to make believe as a career! So in a way through literature i found my Neverland.

  1. Its cool that your journey of literature parallels the story of Peter Pan. You did not want to grow out of the magical world so you found a way to compromise.
